New Ringtone…Woot

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Just put Rascal Flatts What Hurts the Most ringtone on my shiny Samsung Blackjack. Well, it is not shiny since it is black and all, but it is 3G lovely…slim and super fast broadband 3G speeds.  I have to say that the whole ringtone crazy has got me by the horns and I get really giddy when I get a new one. Rascal Flatts is one of my favorite bands right now so this is pretty cool.

Vodafone PCMCIA Card

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006

VodafoneI just picked up a Vodafone wireless broadband card for my upcoming trip to Italy, well it is my honeymoon. I picked up some advice from a local Italian techno-geek, like myself, that this was the best solution to get wireless internet access when I am in Italy. Hopefully, it won’t cost me an arm and a leg as I am sure that I won’t be using it too much while I am there. But, if anyone has any pointers on the service offered in Italy I am all ears.

Vodafone 3G High Speed Broadband Access

Monday, March 13th, 2006

Why is it that we can build stealth fighters here, but we can’t deploy high speed wireless technologies as fast as they do in Europe? Maybe someone can explain this to me. I understand people want to make money, but if you are going to upgrade your network to one standard, why not just skip a generation or two so that we can be on par with networks that are deployed all over the world already? Ok, I am done with my rant now.

During the year, 3G broadband will be progressively extended to other cities (Porto, Braga, Coimbra, Aveiro and Leiria this June) and regions of mainland Portugal and the islands, reaching the main urban areas by the end of the year. When a customer moves into areas still without 3G Broadband coverage, the Vodafone 3G Broadband Mobile Connect Card automatically switches to 3G or GPRS, which are available throughout Portugal.

AT&T / Cingular and Verizon Wireless

Tuesday, March 7th, 2006

It was only a matter of time before the new AT&T aka Cingular, and Verizon Wireless started duking it out. Well, it actually surprised me that this has come already. I don’t think the ink is even dry on the Cingular AT&T deal and they are already at each other’s throats.

The Cingular Video service, based on RealNetworks’ Helix Online platform, is being launched in 16 cities across the U.S. The service offers clips from several television shows ranging from the Disney Channel and the Cartoon Network, to HBO’s The Sopranos and Sex and the City. Later this month, Cingular plans to exclusively offer NCAA men’s basketball video highlights over the streaming video solution. “Cingular Video provides consumers a simple and easier way to access the latest news, sports, entertainment and weather clips whenever they want,” said Sam Hill, vice president of the firm’s Mobile Browse and Developer Program, in a statement. Helix OnlineTV provides encoding, indexing, managing and delivery of content in different formats. Priced at $19.99 for Cingular’s Media Net Unlimited data package, the HBO offerings require additional subscription fees. The streaming video launch was made in the wake of AT&T’s announcement that it was acquiring BellSouth. The two firms had jointly owned Cingular. Verizon Wireless has been offering its Vcast streaming video of TV clips for $15 a month. The new TiVo service — priced at under $5 a month — enables Verizon Wireless users with TiVo recorders at their homes or offices to remotely program the devices - more available

Mobile Phones and Airplane Electronics

Monday, March 6th, 2006

Are you like the family behind me on my last flight that I took? Don’t think that mobile phones have an effect on airplane electonics. Well, maybe reading this study will change your mind about that super, duper important phone call you have to make to your friends or secretary next time you are taking off on a commercial airliner.

Mobile Phones pose danger to airplane electronics - study Published: Monday 6 March 2006.

Alltell Puts Another Shrimp on the Barbie

Wednesday, March 1st, 2006

Our friends at Alltell are looking to extend their Austrailian wireless deal. Australia is currently one of the strongest economies in the world, with very low unemployment rates, great GDP numbers and a booming economy overall. It is no wonder the companies like Alltell are looking to put more and more investment into their wireless deals in Australia.

Samsung SGH-T809 for T-Mobile

Thursday, February 2nd, 2006

I haven’t been blogging much over here at 3G feeds, but I am hoping to make some changes here pretty soon that I think everyone will really enjoy and find useful. I think what most techno-geeks like myself commonly overlook are the phones that the masses of people out in the real world use. Take the Samsung SGH-T809 as an example.  The SGH-T809 is a great little phone. Bluetooth wireless built-in, MP3 player with *stereo speakers*, MP4 and 3GP video playback, AOL IM, ICQ and Yahoo IM and it just plain looks great. The one downside is that it does not have voice-activated dialing. But, to be honest, I have never really had the most success with the voice-activated stuff…maybe it is my Wolfman Jack voice?

CTIA’s Largent Comments on California Wireless Regulation

Thursday, December 22nd, 2005

In response to the California Public Utilities Commission proposing new wireless regulations, CTIA president Steve Largent, had the following to say today:

“Our primary concern is, always has been, and will continue to be, that state rules place the consumer at risk of having fewer choices and paying more for their wireless service. We also maintain that new rules aren’t necessary, since wireless companies are already subject to California’s existing consumer laws.

“It is also important to note that just two weeks ago, a unanimous ruling from the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals invalidated significant portions of a Minnesota law because it would have likely affected rates, an area of regulation that is exclusively reserved for the federal government. We will review the California proposal with these concerns and issues in mind.

“Because of intense marketplace competition and an unwavering commitment to innovation, the wireless industry has successfully brought the consumer more products and services at lower prices. This has been accomplished because the wants and needs of consumers are vigorously pursued each and every day by wireless companies who operate in one of the most competitive markets in America.

“I want to acknowledge President Peevey and Commissioner Kennedy for undertaking a detailed, fair and thorough review of the issue, including a study of how consumers would be affected by this process. I believe their intentions are true, and I hope we can continue to work toward the best interest of the wireless consumer.”

CTIA is the international association for the wireless telecommunications industry. They represent carriers, manufacturers and wireless internet providers (WIPs).
